What Aspen allows, and why evenings matter
Aspen–Pitkin County Airport (ASE) sits at 7,838 feet (FAA), has a single 8,006-foot runway, turns away aircraft with a wingspan over 95 feet or a landing weight over 100,000 pounds, and is closed from about 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. local — the detail is on our Aspen page and in the Aspen airport guide. From Los Angeles the evening is the constraint: the flight must land before Aspen closes, and Van Nuys’s voluntary Quieter Nights Program asks jet operators to avoid flights between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.
In 2027 the destination airport changes. Pitkin County has announced that ASE closes to all flights, commercial and private, from Sunday, April 4, 2027, at 11:00 p.m. until Friday, November 19, 2027, at 7:00 p.m., while the runway is rebuilt. From Los Angeles this is the gentlest of detours: Rifle (RIL) lies west of Aspen, so it is about 25 nautical miles closer than Aspen itself, roughly 600 to 615 nautical miles and an estimated 1 hour 20 minutes aloft. Aspen Snowmass names Rifle, about 61 miles from Aspen, for private aviation; Eagle (EGE), about a 1.5-hour drive, is 640 to 650 nautical miles from Los Angeles.
