Which airport is closest to Vail?

Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE; ICAO: KEGE), which markets itself as the closest airport to Vail. Vail Mountain states the town is 30 miles from EGE, and Beaver Creek Resort puts the airport at 30 minutes away. EGE also receives commercial flights: in 2024 it logged 58,004 operations and 289,867 enplaned passengers, per the airport. In peak season, private aviation shares the runway and ramp with the airlines.

Why is EGE a mountain airport?

Because of elevation and terrain. At 6,547 feet, the air is less dense than at sea level, so every aircraft needs more runway to take off at the same weight. Per the airport, the 2009 extension to 9,000 feet allowed departures at higher weight and, therefore, longer range. The FAA warns of high, unmarked terrain in all quadrants and advises against night operations for pilots unfamiliar with the airport.

It’s also designated a cold-temperature airport (altitude correction at −19°C or below). And when landing on runway 25 — the one with the ILS system — the threshold is displaced by nearly a thousand feet, so the available landing distance drops to 8,000 feet. None of this rules out flying to Eagle; it defines which aircraft, at what weight and with what crew.

Winter at Eagle: what the FAA publishes

First, from November to April there is no snow removal or runway monitoring between 06:00 and 13:00 UTC — 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time under Colorado’s winter schedule. Second, the control tower does not operate 24 hours; outside its published hours, Denver Center provides control. Third, there’s been ILS since 2006 and radar since 2007, which per the airport improved low-visibility operations. In practice, schedules are planned with margin and the alternate is decided before departure.

Can a private flight from Mexico land directly at Eagle?

EGE has customs: CBP operates at the airport as a “user fee” airport (a fee is charged for the service), with a minimum 3-hour advance notice, and eAPIS or APIS is mandatory on every international flight, inbound and outbound. The FAA does not list it as a port of entry or a “landing rights” airport.

But another rule takes precedence. 19 CFR 122.23 applies to flights arriving from Mexico, except public aircraft, scheduled flights and charters of more than 30 seats or 7,500 pounds of payload — meaning it applies to private jets. And 122.24 requires them to land first at the designated airport closest to the border crossing — Laredo, McAllen, San Antonio, El Paso and others in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California. Colorado is not on the list.

The exception is 122.25: an overflight exemption, granted at the discretion of the port director, that allows landing at any US airport with customs staff. It’s requested at least 15 days in advance for a single flight, or 30 days for an annual exemption. If an operator holds one, we confirm it before quoting.

How do you get to Vail from Mexico by private jet?

On the US side, straight-line distances to Eagle are approximately 814 nautical miles from Laredo, 735 from San Antonio and 470 from El Paso (geodesic calculation on FAA coordinates, not actual routes). As a reference, a Citation Latitude, with a manufacturer-published cruise speed of 446 knots, would cover Laredo–Eagle in an estimated 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours of flight time, not accounting for wind or ground time — an estimate, not any operator’s actual time.

Eagle or Aspen? Why Vail families fly into EGE

In a straight line, Eagle and Aspen are about 25 nautical miles apart, but by road Aspen Snowmass calculates about an hour and a half: for Vail and Beaver Creek, Aspen isn’t a shortcut. And Eagle has fewer limits: Aspen prohibits aircraft with a wingspan over 95 feet or a maximum landing weight over 100,000 pounds, and has no customs (detail in our Aspen airport guide). 2027: Aspen closes, Eagle keeps operating

Per Pitkin County, the Aspen airport will close to all flights, commercial and private, from April 4, 2027 at 11:00 p.m. to November 19, 2027 at 7:00 p.m., to rebuild the runway. Eagle isn’t part of the project: Vail and Beaver Creek will keep arriving via EGE, and Aspen Snowmass names it as one of the ways to reach Aspen during the closure. Details in the closure guide.

2026–27 season: key dates

Vail Mountain opens November 13, 2026 and Beaver Creek opens November 25, 2026, per Vail Resorts; closing dates weren’t included in that announcement.
