When exactly is Aspen’s airport closed in 2027?

Pitkin County announced the dates on May 28, 2026: ASE closes Sunday, April 4, 2027, at 11:00 p.m. and stays closed through Friday, November 19, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. — just over seven and a half months. The county’s wording leaves no room for exceptions: “No commercial or general aviation operations will be permitted at ASE while the airport is closed for the 2027 construction, and there will be no access to the terminal during this time.” The airport’s FAQ adds that ASE will also be closed to helicopter traffic.

Everything before April 4 runs normally. The airport’s construction page shows no runway closure scheduled for the 2026–27 winter, so this ski season — including Christmas, Presidents’ Day and spring break — still flies into Aspen itself, under the usual rules on our Aspen airport guide.

Why is the runway being rebuilt now?

The airport’s own answer is short: “The existing runway has reached the end of its useful life.” The rebuild brings the airfield up to the FAA’s Airplane Design Group III standard. Today ASE does not meet the required 400-foot separation between the runway and taxiway centerlines, so the new runway is being widened from 100 to 150 feet and shifted roughly 80 feet west, with its grades adjusted.

That is why the field has to close completely rather than work around the construction. Because the runway moves, every navigational aid is being replaced or relocated. Construction of a new commercial terminal and a new private-aviation (FBO) facility also begins in April 2027; the runway is expected to be finished by November 19, while the new terminal is anticipated in 2029. This is a voter-approved program, and the county describes the goal as improving safety, access, efficiency and long-term reliability.

Where can private jets land while Aspen is closed?

Three fields matter for a private charter. The airport’s FAQ states that Rifle Garfield County Airport (RIL) “will also be available for general aviation (GA) flights,” and names Denver, Grand Junction, Montrose and Vail/Eagle County as the regional airports for commercial service. Aspen Snowmass’s closure release names Rifle for private aviation and lists Eagle, Grand Junction and Montrose as further options. Helicopter operators are pointed to Glenwood Springs (GWS) or Rifle.

In practice, Rifle is the field the airport itself points private aviation to, Eagle is the one with customs on site and the familiar Vail-valley ramp, and Grand Junction has the longest runway but the longest ride to Aspen. Detail on each: our Rifle airport guide and Eagle airport guide.

How do Rifle, Eagle and Grand Junction compare?

On paper the three alternates are all longer-runway, lower-elevation fields than Aspen. Where they differ is distance, hours and customs.

Which aircraft that can’t use Aspen fit Rifle or Eagle?

Aspen prohibits aircraft with a wingspan over 95 feet and a maximum landing weight over 100,000 pounds on dual-wheel gear (160,000 on dual tandem). Those two limits are what rule the largest long-range business jets out of ASE in a normal year. None of the three alternates carries a wingspan remark in its FAA record, and all three publish higher pavement strengths: Rifle 200,000 pounds dual wheel and 250,000 dual tandem; Eagle 140,000 and 255,000, with a critical aircraft category equivalent to a Boeing 757-200; Grand Junction 180,000 and 260,000.

Runway length and altitude also work in the alternates’ favor. Grand Junction sits nearly 3,000 feet lower than Aspen, Rifle about 2,300 feet lower, and Eagle’s 9,000-foot runway is 2,000 feet longer than Aspen’s 7,006-foot landing distance. None of this makes a given aircraft suitable by itself — the operator runs the performance numbers for the specific jet, weight, temperature and runway on every flight — but it does mean the 2027 closure opens options that ASE does not allow today. What does 2027 look like, month by month?

January to March: Aspen operates normally

Winter 2026–27 is ASE’s last full season before the closure. X Games Aspen runs January 29–31 and the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix February 27–28, 2027; Presidents’ Day is Monday, February 15. The airport’s busiest day of 2026 so far was Sunday, February 22 (296 operations) — so the late-February weekend is worth planning early. The season calendar is in Aspen & Vail 2026–27 season dates.

Spring break and early April: the last flights into ASE

US spring break is set school district by school district, so there is no single official date — but any trip ending on or before April 4 can still use Aspen. Mexico’s official SEP spring vacation runs March 22 to April 3, 2027, ending the day before the closure. On April 4 itself, ASE’s Stage III noise rule restricts jet departures from 10:30 p.m., so the practical last departure is before then. Buttermilk closes April 4; Highlands and Snowmass April 11; Aspen Mountain April 18, as conditions allow — so the last two weeks of skiing are reached through Rifle or Eagle.

May: the quiet month, with road work

Memorial Day is Monday, May 31, 2027. The airport warns that summer is a key time for roadwork on Colorado highways and advises checking COtrip before driving. Independence Pass (CO 82 east of Aspen) closes every winter and, per CDOT, typically reopens in late May.

June: the Classic and Aspen Ideas

The FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen is June 18–20, 2027, per the event’s official site, and its opening day is Juneteenth (observed Friday, June 18). Aspen Ideas: Health follows June 22–25, 2027. July and August: peak summer, no Aspen airport

July was ASE’s busiest month in 2025 (5,749 operations) and in 2026 (6,026). Independence Day is observed Monday, July 5, 2027. In 2027 all of that traffic lands elsewhere, which is the strongest argument for choosing the arrival airport and ground transfer well before the summer.

September to mid-November: shoulder season

Labor Day is Monday, September 6, 2027; in 2025 the Labor Day Monday was ASE’s single busiest day of the year (293 operations). The closure runs through the fall until the evening of November 19.

How will you get from the airport to Aspen?

By road, and the airport is candid that the plan is still being built. Its FAQ says rental cars will continue to be available and that “at this time, transportation options have not been arranged,” while local partners coordinate shuttle, transit and rental-car options; Pitkin County says more information on ground transportation will come before the closure. Neither the county nor the airports publish drive times.

From Rifle, the airport’s own figure is 61 miles, east on Interstate 70 to Glenwood Springs and then south on CO 82 up the Roaring Fork Valley; CDOT notes CO 82 is four lanes from Glenwood Springs to just past Basalt. Aspen Snowmass’s release gives its own figures for the other gateways: Eagle about 70 miles, approximately a 1.5-hour drive, and Denver 220 miles, roughly 3.5 hours. We don’t add drive times of our own. What we do is book the car or transfer with the flight, so it is waiting at the aircraft when you land.

What changes when Aspen reopens on November 19?

The runway is expected back by 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2027, and Aspen Snowmass describes the reopening as timed for the 2027–28 ski season; the resorts had not published 2027–28 opening dates as of this update. Passengers will keep using the existing terminal until the new one is completed, anticipated in 2029.

The detail that is easy to miss is the wingspan limit. The airport says that once the runway meets the FAA standard, the limit will rise from 95 feet to “less than or equal to 118′.” It has not said the new limit takes effect on reopening day, so until it confirms the date, plan on today’s 95-foot rule — and on the standing limits summarized on our Aspen page.
