Where is the Rifle airport?

Rifle Garfield County Airport is three miles east of the town of Rifle, in western Colorado, along the Interstate 70 corridor. It’s a public airport, owned by Garfield County, that has operated since 1940. Its own site places it 27 miles from Glenwood Springs, 46 from Eagle, 61 from Aspen, 65 from Grand Junction and 88 from Vail. In a straight line, the distance between Rifle and the Aspen airport is approximately 44 nautical miles (81 km), a geodesic calculation on FAA coordinates, not a flight route.

Its identifiers are RIL (FAA/IATA) and KRIL (ICAO). It has Jet A fuel, major airframe and engine maintenance service, hangars and FBO services on the field, per FAA records and the airport itself.

How far is Rifle from Aspen by road?

The airport and Aspen Snowmass agree on the figure: 61 miles, about 98 km. The route is the same year-round: east on Interstate 70 to Glenwood Springs, then south on CO 82, which climbs the Roaring Fork valley to Aspen. Per the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), CO 82 has four lanes from Glenwood Springs to a bit past Basalt, about 25 miles.

We don’t publish a drive time: no official source we consulted gives one, and in practice it depends on traffic, construction and weather. What we do is coordinate the ground transfer as part of the same trip, so the car is waiting on the ramp when you land. In winter, this is also the route CDOT itself points to for reaching Aspen while Independence Pass, east of town, is closed, typically from November to late May.

Why does Rifle receive aircraft Aspen can’t?

The difference starts with altitude. Rifle sits about 2,300 feet lower than Aspen, and at lower altitude the air is denser, which generally improves a jet’s takeoff and landing performance. Its 7,000-foot runway is a bit shorter than Aspen’s total runway length, but nearly matches the distance Aspen publishes for landing (7,006 feet), and FAA data assigns it a strength of 200,000 pounds on dual wheel gear and 250,000 on dual tandem, versus 100,000 and 160,000 at Aspen.

The FAA’s notes for Rifle also don’t include a wingspan restriction like Aspen’s 95 feet, and the airport has prepared large hangar lots, 100 × 100 feet or more, designed for aircraft up to 134,500 pounds of gross landing weight. That doesn’t mean any aircraft is suitable: actual performance depends on the model, the weight, the temperature and the runway, and the operator calculates it for each flight. But it opens the door to aircraft that, by wingspan or weight, can’t land at Aspen.

Why is Rifle the alternate during the 2027 Aspen closure?

The Aspen airport will be closed to all operations, commercial and private, from Sunday, April 4, 2027 at 11:00 p.m. to Friday, November 19, 2027 at 7:00 p.m., while its runway is rebuilt. In its frequently asked questions, the Aspen airport itself says Rifle Garfield County Airport “will be available for general aviation flights,” and also names it as a destination for helicopters, along with Glenwood Springs. Aspen Snowmass, in its statement on the closure, likewise names Rifle for private aviation.

The other alternate is Eagle/Vail (EGE), with a longer runway, 9,000 feet, and customs on the field. Which one makes sense depends on the aircraft, the schedule and where you’re going in the valley; the full closure analysis is in our 2027 closure guide, and Aspen’s limits are in the Aspen airport guide. On Rifle’s advisories page, as of this update, there is no notice about the closure or about operational changes for 2027; we’ll review it as the date approaches.

Does the Rifle airport have customs?

We didn’t find customs service at Rifle. The airport doesn’t appear on US Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) list of general aviation airports, isn’t among the designated airports under 19 CFR 122.24 nor among the user-fee airports under 19 CFR 122.15, and its site doesn’t mention customs services. By contrast, Eagle (EGE) does appear on the CBP list.

For a flight from Mexico this changes little, because the rule is the same for any Colorado destination: 19 CFR 122.24 requires landing first at the designated airport closest to the border crossing point — such as Laredo, McAllen, San Antonio or El Paso — unless the operator holds a waiver under section 122.25. After that, the leg to Rifle is a domestic flight. The exact airport is confirmed with the operator; route details are at private flights from Mexico to Aspen (in Spanish).

Winter at Rifle

Rifle is lower and more open than Aspen, but it’s a mountain airport in winter. The FAA warns that snow removal equipment operates on the field from October 1 to May 15, that after snowfalls the airport may operate before all taxiways are cleared, and classifies it as a cold-temperature airport (altitude correction at −13°C or below). The airport publishes average January temperatures of 37°F high and 10°F low (about 3°C and −12°C), with an average annual snowfall of 38.6 inches.
