When does the holiday season start at Aspen and Vail?

Vail Mountain opens first, on November 13, 2026, with Beaver Creek following on November 25, per Vail Resorts’ August 18 release. In Aspen, Aspen Mountain and Snowmass open together on Thanksgiving Day itself, November 26, and Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk join on December 12, per Aspen Snowmass. For a Christmas trip that means every mountain in both valleys is scheduled to be open well before the holiday week.

The first pressure point comes earlier than Christmas. The Aspen FBO flags November 25–29 as a holiday travel period — Thanksgiving week, which this year coincides with Aspen’s opening day. Which holiday days are busiest at Aspen’s airport?

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport publishes its daily operations counts, and last season’s show exactly where the holiday crunch sits. In early December 2025, the airport handled between 37 and 95 operations a day. By December 29 and 30 that had climbed to 229 and 231. The peak came on the way home: Saturday, January 3, 2026 logged 294 operations, the second-busiest day of the entire year.

For context, the airport cites an FAA throughput average of 28 operations per hour at ASE under ideal conditions — 448 a day. A 294-operation day uses about two-thirds of that theoretical ceiling — and the ceiling itself assumes ideal conditions. Across 2025, 70.8% of the airport’s 46,744 operations were non-airline traffic: general aviation, air taxi and charter, the category every private charter flies in.

Why does the return weekend matter more than Christmas Eve?

In last season’s data, the biggest holiday day came at the end of the break, not the start. This season the Aspen FBO’s window closes on Sunday, January 3, 2027, the weekend after New Year’s Day — the same return pattern that produced last year’s 294-operation Saturday. If your dates are flexible in one direction, the flight home is usually the one to settle first.

US school winter breaks are set district by district, so there is no single national calendar we can cite. Holiday demand in Aspen is also international: Mexico’s official SEP winter vacation runs December 21, 2026 to January 5, 2027, overlapping almost the entire FBO window. How does Aspen’s curfew shape holiday departure times?

The airport is closed from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. local time, with exceptions only for air ambulance, search and rescue and firefighting. Stage III jets may not land between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. and may not depart between 10:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., so the last practical jet departure is before 10:30 p.m. The control tower runs from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

On a quiet day that leaves plenty of room. On a day near 300 operations, with short winter daylight and weather that can hold aircraft on the ground, the usable window narrows, and a departure that slips past the cutoff waits until morning. That is why we plan holiday schedules backward from the curfew and build in an alternate airport before the trip, not on the day. Should you fly into Eagle for Vail and Beaver Creek?

Yes — Vail and Beaver Creek are served by Eagle County Regional (EGE), not Aspen. Vail Mountain puts the town 30 miles from the airport, and Beaver Creek Resort puts the airport about 30 minutes away. Per FAA data, EGE has a 9,000 × 150-foot runway at 6,547 feet, a control tower from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and it appears on CBP’s list of general aviation airports with customs on the field — relevant if your group is arriving from abroad.

Eagle is busy at the holidays too. The Eagle FBO’s travel alert says “reservations strongly encouraged during peak season,” without naming a cut-off date (the alert itself is undated). Runways, customs and winter operations are in our Eagle airport guide.

Winter hours matter at Eagle as well. FAA data notes that from November to April the airport does not clear snow or monitor runway conditions between 06:00 and 13:00 UTC — 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time — and it recommends against night operations for pilots unfamiliar with the field. In practice, a late-evening arrival into Eagle on a snowy holiday night is planned with the same margin as one into Aspen.

How far ahead should you book a holiday flight?

No official number exists. Neither aspenairport.com nor flyege.com publishes a holiday booking lead time, and as of September 22, 2026 the FAA’s special traffic management (e-STMP) page listed no program for Aspen or Colorado this winter. If the FAA issues one, its notice sets the reservation deadlines. What can be said from the airport’s own data is that the busiest holiday days already run at roughly two-thirds of ideal-conditions capacity, under a hard nightly curfew — so the later a schedule is set, the fewer departure times and ramp options remain.

The practical order of decisions is simple: first the aircraft, because Aspen’s wingspan and weight limits narrow the choice; then the arrival airport, Aspen or Eagle; then the return time, working backward from the 10:30 p.m. departure restriction on the busiest weekend of the season. Once those three are fixed, the rest of the trip — ground transfer, catering, ski storage — follows.

One thing this season does not need to worry about: the Aspen airport closure of 2027 runs from April 4 to November 19, 2027, well after the holidays, and does not affect Eagle.
