Which airport do you fly into for Vail?

Eagle County Regional, in Gypsum, which the airport presents as the closest airport to Vail. The resorts give the same answer: Vail Mountain states that Vail is 30 miles from EGE, and Beaver Creek Resort, in Avon, puts the airport 30 minutes away. A private flight lands at EGE and the last stretch is by car.

EGE is a mountain airport with a single runway, 9,000 × 150 feet, at 6,547 feet above sea level (FAA). It also carries airline traffic, 58,004 operations in 2024 per the airport, so in peak weeks private aircraft share the runway and ramp with scheduled flights. How long is a private flight to Vail from major US cities?

The table below measures the straight-line distance from one airport in each metro to Eagle, using FAA coordinates, and converts it into air time at a named manufacturer cruise speed. Every one of these legs sits inside the published range of a midsize jet, so the flights are planned nonstop; the real range on the day depends on passengers, bags, weather and the elevation at Eagle.

Two practical notes. The times are still-air figures: on any given day, winds make the westbound and eastbound legs differ, which is why a quote carries the operator’s own flight plan. And Chicago Executive’s longest runway, 5,001 feet, is the shortest in the table; whether it suits your aircraft at your weight is a question for the operator, and Chicago Midway (6,522 feet, FAA) is another option. We settle that when we match the aircraft.

Why fly into Eagle and not Aspen for a Vail trip?

Aspen sits in a different valley. In a straight line, Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE) and Eagle are about 25 nautical miles apart, but by road Aspen Snowmass puts Eagle roughly an hour and a half from Aspen, so landing in Aspen for a Vail stay adds a mountain drive rather than saving one. Eagle is also the less restrictive field: its runway is almost 1,000 feet longer than Aspen’s 8,006 feet, and it sits nearly 1,300 feet lower (FAA).

Aspen has its own wingspan, weight and curfew limits, explained on our Aspen page, and it does not appear on CBP’s general-aviation list; Eagle does. If your week splits between the two towns, you can arrive at one and depart from the other; we then plan the aircraft around the stricter of the two.

Does the 2027 Aspen airport closure affect Vail flights?

No. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport closes to all flights from Sunday, April 4, 2027 at 11:00 p.m. to Friday, November 19, 2027 at 7:00 p.m. local, to rebuild its runway; in the airport’s words, “no commercial or general aviation operations will be permitted.” Eagle is not part of that project and keeps operating. The practical effect runs the other way: Aspen Snowmass names Eagle as one of the ways to reach Aspen during the closure. Details in our 2027 closure guide.

Vail’s 2026–27 season: the dates to plan around

Vail Resorts announced on August 18, 2026 that Vail Mountain plans to open on November 13 and Beaver Creek on November 25; the release did not give closing dates. Beaver Creek hosts the Birds of Prey World Cup from December 3 to 13, 2026. On the federal calendar, Thanksgiving falls on November 26, Christmas on Friday, December 25, and Presidents’ Day on February 15, 2027 (OPM). As a reference, the Citation Latitude seats up to 9 occupants with a published maximum range of 2,700 nautical miles, more than the longest leg in the table above; actual range falls with load, elevation and temperature.
